Pirelli Scorpion E-MTB R tyre

The Scorpion™ E-MTB range is the evolution of mountain bike tyres: a new standard in durability, puncture protection and battery saving. All of this has been achieved working on the new patented structure HyperWALL™ and the new rubber formulation SmartGRIP+ Compound. Scorpion™ E-MTB sets new standards for electric mountain bikes.

Medium profile tread design with added traction and durability for uncompromising performance over a variety of terrains. The Scorpion™ E-MTB R tread pattern was developed for use on the same wide range of terrains as the Scorpion™ E-MTB M. The specific design of the central tread, derived from Pirelli's experience in the world of Motocross, increases grip and stability both when braking and accelerating and gives the Scorpion™ E-MTB R unique levels of confidence and reliability on mixed terrain.

Technologies

SmartGRIP+ Compound

Pirelli added Lignin to its E-MTB specific compound called SmartGRIP+, it is a naturally sourced chemical component out of the craft pulping process of exhausted paper. Not only it is a low impact additive, but it also enhances the mechanical properties of the rubber even further to result in an ultimate tension strength and elongation of the rubber specimen in the lab, increasing it by 10%. This results in a better tear resistance as needed to sustain overloads of fast riding and braking torques from electric motors of modern E-MTBikes. This performance enhancement comes with no compromise of the other characteristic of SmartGRIP Compound formulation, witch is the chemical grip.

Hyperwall

The third innovation Pirelli brings to the cycling world from its Motorsport background: a newly designed construction of the bead and sidewall area that increases even further the tyre performances in terms of handling at low pressure and pinch flat resistance. Key in offroad applications, especially in the most demanding ones such as gravity and eMTB, the integrity of the bead area and the stability of the sidewalls are a founding pillar for the overall tyre performance: the tread with its sophisticated rubber compound highly relies on, and strictly behaves dependently to the stability and integrity of the bead and sidewall themselves. Pirelli introduced a construction that solidly anchors the bead and the rubber sidewall insert with a woven fabric flipper, making them behave as one whole solid piece instead of as separate components with relative movements to each other, with industry standard constructions.
