The Colnago C64 represents an evolution from the C60. The frame features all new materials but is made with the same handmade construction technique at Colnago’s Cambiago factory.
Colnago C64: completely handmade – “tailor-made,” it could be said – in Italy, with revolutionary tubes (larger, lighter, more durable), the C64 is the fruit of more than two years of research. Yet, it was designed based on an almost immeasurable history of cycling innovation and success – one which began in 1954. The Colnago C64’s tubes and lugs are made of the finest carbon fiber, making it a unique frame in the world – one that cannot be compared to anything else. In the C64’s design lies Ernesto Colnago’s knowledge and experience, gained from a lifelong pursuit of cycling perfection.
The C64’s monocoque, carbon fiber fork is designed to support the integrated front-brake body with mounts for housing the dual-pivot system. This braking system is stiffer, as well as more powerful and aerodynamic. The design of the fork is also integrated with the shape of the front lug, providing even more aerodynamic benefits as well as greater comfort and precise control.
The C64 uses Colnago’s ThreadFit 82.5 standard. It combines the reliability and practicality of a threaded (BSA) bottom bracket, the width and the greater rigidity of the PressFit standard. Inside the bottom bracket juncture there is an aluminum threaded sleeve in which two lightweight alloy cups are treaded into. Within these, the bearings are pressed – removable when needed. The ThreadFit 82.5 standard is compatible with all PressFit 86.5 (BB86) bearings.
Carbon Rear Dropouts
The C64 uses carbon monocoque dropouts, with an internally- mounted, replaceable derailleur hanger. The advantages in terms of strength, weight and longevity are significant.
To maximize aerodynamics and integration, they used a special seatpost for the C64. Using the proven forged aluminum head used on models currently in production, a smaller section tube (approximately 27.2 mm) has been designed and constructed to provide comfort. The aerodynamic profile (also with a truncated profile – matching the seat tube) guarantees the best aerodynamic performance.
Constructed from a single piece, from the base to the apex, the C64’s seat tube is lighter and, above all, more rigid so it can transmit all the power delivered by the cyclist to the road.
The C64’s front and rear brakes are direct-mount. The main advantage of this system comes from ideal integration, both structural and aerodynamic, with the frame and fork. In terms of performance, this translates to a lightweight, rigid and more powerful system. They also offer better modulation and a superior aesthetic.
The seat clamp is integrated into the top tube for a cleaner aesthetic and improved aerodynamics. The mechanism is housed completely inside the frame, easily accessible with a hexagonal wrench. This solution also protects the mechanism from dirt.
Asymmetrical chain stays
On the right side (transmission side), the frame dimensioned as big as possible, while the left side is oversized. In this way the frame is even stiffer and, thanks to the possibility of increasing the section of the tubes, lighter.
The headset’s body is made with a special polymer, composed of carbon fiber and a unique mixture of nylon and elastomers. This feature provides additional absorption of road vibration, improving both the riding experience and comfort.
Integrated bottom bracket cable-guide
It is integrated into the mold of the bottom bracket lug. This feature provides maximum compatibility, ease of assembly and added lightness. A small detail with great benefits.
Another key area where is completely changed the technology is the chainstay/dropout area. The C64’s dropouts are now fully part of the chainstays. The one-piece construction allowed us to lower the weight, add vertical compliance, and retain the same lateral stiffness. The rim-brake chainstays are a bit wider than the disc version, to help keep the same rear stiffness due to the lack of the thru-axle. This results in a very light but stiff full carbon rear end. The replaceable derailleur hanger is the very same, internally mounted hanger used on all our current road rim-brake frames. The lightweight seat stay is designed around very wide tires, and houses the alloy threaded inserts for direct-mount brakes.
While lower weight has so far been the key point of the new frame, tire clearance is another important factor Colnago had to address while designing the new C64. The frame has a clearance of a 36.5 mm diameter, which means you can use all 28 mm tires with plenty of room to spare. Brakes are the limiting factor here, so the disc version has a bit more space.
