Giro Coalition Spherical helmet

Only Giro could engineer an impressively lightweight full-face helmet that still provides heavyweight protection. At a mere 800 grams (producer weight) in medium, this NTA-certified MTB helmet still packs the punch of Spherical Technology™, powered by Mips®, sandwiching Giro innovative integration of Mips in between independent EPP and EPS foam layers designed to optimize management of both high-speed and low-speed impacts.

Coalition Spherical also manages to rival the ventilation and cooling power of some brand’s road helmets, pairing massive front intake ports with efficient rear exhaust vents via deep internal channelling. Like many of Giro creations, one of Coalition’s most impressive innovations lies hidden inside: the Halo System combines a chinbar with Pebax® (a material that is engineered to provide the perfect range of flex and rigidity) and elastomeric bushings that are integrated into the EPS to absorb and dissipate kinetic forces.

The result is a helmet that exceeds standard chinbar deflection certification testing almost 2x. With Ionic+™ treatments to control odour, and two sets of removable cheek pads to help fine-tune fit, the Coalition Spherical sets a new benchmark for lightweight full-face protection

Tecnology

Spherical Technology

The unique ball-and-socket design of Spherical Technology utilizes two separate liners to help manage impact forces. The material and density of the inner and outer liners can be optimized with Progressive Layering to help manage a broad range of impact forces: the Insurgent features an outer EPS layer (to address high-speed impacts) and an inner EPP layer (with rebound characteristics designed to handle slower speed falls.) When you combine the benefits of Progressive Layering with the market-leading Mips® Brain Protection System, which can help redirect rotational energy away from the brain, you get more comprehensive protection. Developed at the Bell+Giro Dome laboratory in partnership with Mips®, Spherical Technology’s unique Ball-and-Socket Design redirects impact forces, bringing market-leading design, performance and brain protection together without compromising comfort, ventilation, weight or style.

MIPS Brain Protection

MIPS is a low friction layer inside the helmet which allows the head to rotate relatively to the helmet in an angled impact. This substantially reduces rotational violence and the potential for damage to the brain. Collaborating with some of the world's leading neurosurgeons and experts, MIPS® has established that when you fall, your head most often hits the ground at an angle, creating a rotational shock to the brain. This rotational shock can cause strain in your brain. A helmet with MIPS® absorbs much of that rotational energy, offering you better protection. And if, against all the odds, you do fall vertically onto your head, a helmet with MIPS® will protect you just as well as an ordinary helmet.
